“Turns out the future does have flying cars.” —Elon Musk

Good Morning, and happy flying cars to all who celebrate! Tesla unveiled its long-awaited Roadster, which pulled off a midair flip using thrusters built with SpaceX, a sign the two companies may officially combine sooner than expected. And CoreWeave’s credit default swaps hit distressed levels as investors price in 60% odds of a default.

A McKinsey partner resigned from a nonprofit role after coming under fire for his comments on female CEOs. The consulting firm is also putting AI avatars in some entry-level interviews to play the role of a client. And YouTube is looking to expand into audiobooks.

Plus: KKR-backed Catalio seeks $500 million for AI-healthcare deals, and how team stats become tradeable assets.

SQUEEZ OF THE DAY

AI’s $500K Matchmakers

The AI boom is making tech workers rich enough to outsource almost anything, and the latest trend is paying to find a soulmate. Matchmakers say employees at companies like Anthropic, Nvidia, and Perplexity are hiring them to find a partner. And, for all the talk of AI replacing white-collar jobs or changing online dating, matchmakers are apparently looking AI-proof.

One Silicon Valley matchmaker says she charges from $75,000 to more than $500,000 through her firm, and some VIP clients also pay bonuses often in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for reaching milestones like an exclusive relationship, engagement, or marriage.

And for those prices, clients get considerably more than just an introduction over drinks. Matchmakers look for potential matches on social media, LinkedIn, and even the wild, and approach them for their clients. And packages can include wardrobe upgrades, professional photos, coaching before dates, and even debriefs afterward.

The demand makes sense when you look at how some clients got here. Founders and tech workers spend years prioritizing their companies, then find themselves with money and very little dating experience.

And dating-app fatigue is helping, too. Busy professionals are willing to pay someone to narrow the search and arrange introductions with people who are serious about meeting. And this isn’t exclusively a service for wealthy tech guys: about 60% of clients at matchmaking firm Three Day Rule are women.

Takeaway: Still, even a six-figure matchmaking budget comes with execution risk. Coaches say clients often need practice talking to people, figuring out what matters to them, and getting comfortable away from a screen. And while a matchmaker can find someone worth meeting, getting through dinner can’t be outsourced.

BOOK OF THE DAY

What Went Wrong With Capitalism

Description: Ruchir Sharma argues that capitalism has drifted away from its original promise of rewarding innovation, competition, and productive risk-taking. Instead, government intervention, easy money, corporate concentration, and the growing influence of wealthy interests have helped create an economy in which established companies and asset owners often benefit more than workers, entrepreneurs, and new competitors. Drawing on economic history and global financial trends, Sharma examines how policies intended to stabilize markets and promote prosperity can also protect incumbents, inflate asset prices, and deepen inequality. Rather than arguing that capitalism itself has failed, he makes the case that its rules have been distorted. The book challenges readers to reconsider the relationship between governments, central banks, corporations, and markets, and asks what reforms could restore competition and broaden economic opportunity.

Book Length: 384 pages
Release Date: June 11, 2024

When governments protect everyone from failure, they can end up protecting the powerful from competition and everyone else from opportunity.

Reverse LBOs are Here

Higher financing costs and tighter return thresholds have made entry price more consequential than ever. Buyers have less room for error, while bankers increasingly need to understand how far sponsors can stretch on valuation in a live process.

Mosaic’s new Reverse LBO helps answer that question quickly.

Enter a target IRR or MOIC, and Mosaic works backward to calculate the maximum purchase price, entry multiple, or bid premium that supports the required return. As growth, margins, leverage, financing costs, or other assumptions change, the answer updates automatically.

For bankers, that means a faster way to frame sponsor bid capacity, pressure-test valuation, and run scenarios during a process. For PE teams, it means quickly understanding how much they can pay while still preserving target returns.

See a Reverse LBO in action.

Optimal Stopping

You are hiring, or hunting for an apartment, and you see candidates one at a time with no going back. Reject too early and you know nothing about the market. Commit too early and you never see the best option.

Math has an answer. Look at the first 37 percent of the options without choosing any of them, then take the first one that beats everything you have seen. With 100 candidates, you pass on the first 37.

That gets you the best option about 37 percent of the time, the highest odds any strategy can offer under these rules. Set the size of your search window before you begin, and commit once it closes.
