Good Morning! UBS officially completed its Credit Suisse takeover yesterday. But there’s more trouble in the M&A world brewing, with the FTC planning a restraining order to halt Microsoft's acquisition of Activision. It turns out Netflix’s password-sharing crackdown is paying off, with the company reporting a surge in new signups. And crypto prices are already stabilizing after plummeting in the wake of the SEC crackdown.

1. Story of the Day: Dr. Gig

It turns out doctors are as burned out as ever in 2023 - almost as much as the insufferable investment banking VP in your office. But doctors have a trick up their sleeves that investment bankers don’t - they’re realizing they can make more money and work fewer hours if they work part-time.

Physicians are going all-in and turning down traditional career paths in favor of the gig economy. And the numbers speak for themselves: ~50,000 doctors, constituting 7% of the U.S. physician workforce, have embraced the gig economy as their primary mode of practice - making the most money while maintaining a work-life balance.

These physicians are capitalizing on the burgeoning need for their services, particularly in understaffed community hospitals. And they’re often making 30% to 50% more than what a full-time hospital staff doctor would typically earn—sometimes even more, depending on the specialty and location.

And it’s not just about the money. Working in the gig economy provides doctors with flexibility and autonomy. And with a 2023 survey finding that 42% more physicians identify as burned out as compared to 2018, the gig economy could provide doctors with work-life balance.

Takeaway: But just because doctors can work part-time, does it mean they should? Gig doctors are often leaving benefits on the table, and who knows what bouncing around will mean for their careers. A life of travel may sound fun in theory but just ask consultants how much they love the travel they do for work.

4. Book of the Day: The Power of Conflict

Most people try their best to avoid conflict. Bar Rescue host Jon Taffer understands that. Conflict can have negative results. It’s easy to think that the key to a happy workplace or marriage is to avoid conflict. In reality, that’s not the case—the key is to argue smarter.

Enter the Toolkit for Getting Conflict Right. Taffer’s approach is focused on deliberate conflict—otherwise known as “conflict with a purpose.” There are selective and strategic ways to have difficult conversations, and when doing so, to stay aware of your objectives rather than escalating tension unnecessarily.

As Taffer explains, “The key is to act affirmatively, constructively, and productively.” Eliminating conflict isn’t always the answer; inevitably there will be times when it will arise.

Engaging in conflict can be a way to clear the air, and get to the bottom of issues that, once resolved, can strengthen friendships, ease tensions at work, and address problems before they have a chance to bubble over.

With easy-to-follow advice that shows how to best engage in constructive discourse to get the results you want, The Power of Conflict provides you with the rules to argue smarter, uphold your values, and keep the conversation real.

The step-by-step guide starts with the inception of the conflict and carries through the difficult conversation’s conclusion, arming readers with the skills and confidence to fight for their principles.
